A little real time update: If you are wondering why it took some time from the last post to this update it is because we just got back from an island hopping in Fiji where we had no internet. Therefore it has not been possible to update and I didn't have the time to prepare any posts to schedule before we left. The blog is now a bit behind, but I will continue to update it from the latest update but speed up the pace a bit so that we get back to normal. Now you can stop worrying about that (if you did) :)
After Townsville, we went on to Airlie Beach and Whitsundays. We made a stop for some sandwiches with peanut butter (actually a kind of a standard meal during the during our travels. It's so easy to bring.) We walked along the harbour, relaxed, went for a swim in the lagoon and took a little walk before we went to our campsite which was in the middle of the forest. We barbecued skewers and ate them with sweet potatoes and some salad in the common kitchen. It was very well equipped with everything needed but very rundown (spider webs everywhere and several lamps etc were broken). When I was going to the toilet, I opened the lid and in it lies no less than - a green (certainly poisionous) frog😮. I screamed loudly and Tim thought it was a snake that bit me so he got really scared too. You could find these frogs everywhere on the campsite but also two great Australian Shepherds who faithfully waited for food next to us when we ate.
The following day we went up early and took the van to Whitsunday's shopping center where we were picked up by Ocean Rafting for a day at Withsundays. It was a pretty bumpy trip out and first we had an hour's snorkeling. We are unfortunately not so impressed by the snorkeling in Australia, but you may have to go a little further to see the really nice parts of the Great Barrier Reef!
We saw the world's whitest beach when we arrived at Whitehaven beach in Whitsundays. We walked along the beach under a cloudy but nice sky and it was incredibly beautiful. Hills Inlet was the viewpoint that we went to and there was also a sandbar where some parts of Pirates of the Caribbean was recorded. Our guide told us that they had transported palm trees to make it look like the Caribbean and that each palm tree cost $ 30,000 (about $ 200,000). Crazy!
The boat took us to another beach where we gathered for some food. A strange phenomenon we soon discovered was that the sand made a squeak sound when we walked in it. So weird? But the fact is, I've never seen such a white beach in my entire life! It is apparently the volcano that spat out of this "white potato flour". The journey home was even more bumpy but we were rewarded with a chocolate cake afterwards. We picked up our campervan, went to the supermarked and then continued to Kape Hillsborough to the next see the kangaroos (wallabees) at sunrise 05:45 (more about that in the next post). Chicken burgers, salad and sweet potatoes for supper and a cold beer and cider before we went to sleep.
